Miscues prove costly for Saints in home opener

Moberly, Mo.

MOBERLY, Mo. - The Saints weren't able to clean up their sloppy play and visiting Robert Morris University-Springfield (Ill.) heated up from the outside in the second half to run away with a 104-85 victory over Central Christian College of the Bible on Tuesday at Pelfrey Hall.

Central Christian (1-2) started strong in their home opener, grabbing an early 8-2 lead just two minutes into action. After a back and forth affair, they matched their largest lead at 35-29 with 6:52 left to play in the half.

However, turnovers played a huge part in giving RMU-Springfield (1-0) momentum as the Saints committed 18 in the first half and allowed the Eagles to take a 44-42 lead into the locker room.

The Saints led 58-56 with 14:58 left to play in the game, but the Eagles responded with a 16-4 run over the next three minutes to take control. RMU-Springfield shot 11-for-15 from behind the arc in the second half after going just 3-for-13 in the first half.

RMU-Springfield's Leo Brown led all scorers with 26 points on 10-for-13 shooting from the field and 5-for-7 from 3-point range. Four other Eagles reached double figures, led by Aaron Turner with 19 points.

The Saints were led by Jesse Granados' 18 points. Kedron Rollings tossed in 15 points, followed by Wayne Alsberry with 12 points, and both Micah Miller and Raymond Sellers with 10 each. Three Saints finished with seven rebounds each.

Central Christian shot 53 percent from the field, but went only 3-for-12 from behind the arc in the second half after hitting six of 14 in the first half. They won the rebound battle, 37-31, but committed a season-high 31 turnovers.

The Saints travel down Highway 63 for an exhibition on Friday with Columbia College at 7 p.m.

The Saints heated up quickly and didn't let up as they sank a season-high 18 3-pointers in Central Christian College of the Bible's 87-63 victory over Calvary University on Thursday in the Ferneau Center.

Central Christian (2-4) missed their first three attempts from long range, then went on to hit nine of their next 13 to take a 50-30 lead into the locker room. Part of the offensive explosion was a 15-0 run midway through the first half that pushed the margin from six to 21 in a matter of three minutes.

The aerial assualt continued in the second half as the Saints went 9-for-13 from behind the arc to finish at 62 percent (18-for-29) for the game. Calvary (1-5) got as close as 15 points in the second half, while Central Christian led by as many as 27.

Bears rally to end Saints' winning streak

Moberly, Mo.

Following a pair of exhibitions and a high-scoring loss at home to start the second half of the season, the Central Christian College men's basketball team found some rhythm as it hit mid-January.

The Saints rode a three-game winning streak into Saturday's Midwest Christian College Conference matchup with Barclay College, but couldn't hold on to a nine-point second half lead as the Bears left the Ferneau Center with a 98-94 victory.

CCCB (6-8, 1-1 MCCC) led for most of the first 35 minutes of play until Barclay (2-9, 1-1 MCCC) used a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the second half with 7:44 remaining. The Saints quickly regained the lead until the two teams began taking turns out front in the last five minutes.

Trailing 95-91 with 36 seconds to go, CCCB's Jesse Granados sank a 3-pointer from the right wing to make it a one point game. Dre Thompson made only one of two free throws on the other end, but Granados' attempt from beyond the left arc with five seconds left would not fall.

The Saints were forced to foul with 4 seconds remaining, and Key Maloney hit both free throws to seal the win.

Granados scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds to cap off a stellar week in which he averaged 23.8 points, 8.3 rebounds and shot 57 percent from the field and 3-point line (19-for-33) through four games.

Kedron Rollings scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead all scorers, while Micah Miller scored 16 points and Jaime Rodriguez added 10.

On Friday night, CCCB knocked off Manhattan Christian College, 98-81, for just their third win over the Thunder in the last 20 years. In that game, Granados led the way with 31 points and 11 rebounds. Rollings scored another 23 points and Rodriguez had 20.

The Saints defeated Union College, 77-61, in Lincoln, Neb., on Wednesday, just two days after topping Ozark Christian College, 92-86, at home in a non-conference matchup that the two teams added to the schedule in December.

On Friday, the Saints head to Joplin for a rematch with Ozark Christian in a game that counts toward the MCCC standings. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
