Women's Basketball opens season with weekend split, Win No. 1 for Jeffrey

The Saints got their season started off on a high note. Tied at 48 entering the fourth quarter, Central Christian College of the Bible outscored visiting Grace Christian University, 25-11, in the final frame to win their season opener, 73-59, on Friday night at the Ferneau Center.

The win marked the first as a head coach for Tressa Jeffrey, who played three seasons for the Saints and was an assistant coach last season.

On Saturday, the CCCB women could never get traction against Free Lutheran Bible College as the Conquerors led from start to finish before leaving town with a 70-51 victory to close the Central Classic.

GAME NOTES:

  • The score was tied eight times and there were 10 lead changes until the Saints took the lead for good with 6:35 left to play.
  • Macey Whisenand was a huge spark off the bench, going 5-for-7 from 3-point range.
  • The Saints shot 42 percent (10-for-24) from behind the arc to the Tigers' eight percent (2-for-25)
  • Central Christian got to the line often, making 21 of their 32 attempts (66 percent)

  • FLBC jumped out to a 19-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and the Saints only got as close as eight the rest of the way
  • Central Christian shot just 28 percent from the field and 21 percent (4-for-19) on 3s
  • The Conquerors didn't shoot much better, finishing at 36 percent from the field and 7 percent (1-for-14) on 3s
  • FLBC won two key battles: Points in the Paint (26-18) and Points off Turnovers (8-0)
  • The Conquerors went on to lead by as many as 26 late in the fourth quarter
